Visiting Comino Island: All You Need to Know

Blissful little Comino is no longer a hidden gem, but the island with a population of only three people remains a lovely and quiet place to spend a day. While it’s famous for the Blue Lagoon, the whole island can feel like a lost paradise. We give you an insight into the unspoiled beauty of this tiny Mediterranean island below.

Spending the day on Comino is one of Malta’s premier highlights...

Visiting Comino Island

All You Need to Know

The Highlights and Attractions of Comino

Comino Island is a getaway into the wonders of nature, and you can walk all the way around the island in just two hours; which is good because there are only a couple of vehicles on the entire island. The great appeal of Comino is this opportunity to escape onto a virtually uninhabited paradise, where all you can hear is your own footsteps. It’s wild and mostly empty, with an official population of just three.

Most visitors come exclusively for the Blue Lagoon, a mystical and now world-famous stretch of water that is even prettier than the postcards suggest. The nearby Crystal Lagoon is just as inspiring, although it’s less popular because you can only swim here by jumping from a boat. When spending a day on the island you should also check out Santa Maria Tower, a leftover from when Comino was a leprosy colony, along with the public beach at Santa Marija Bay. Comino is also a major destination for scuba divers and snorkellers.

Planning a Visit to Comino Island

There are two ways to visit Comino. Tour boats leave from Malta and Gozo throughout the day, from harbours in Sliema, St. Paul’s Bay, Mellieha and Mgarr. These are usually all-inclusive cruises that give you food and refreshments along with two to three hours at the Blue Lagoon. Some boats are large and fairly luxurious while others are small and more traditional. Your hotel should be able to arrange a tour or you can visit the harbour to inspect the boat before you choose which tour to go on. Full-day boat tours also stop at other attractions.

A public ferry takes passengers from Cirkewwa on the far northwestern tip of Malta to the Comino port at St. Niklaw Bay. This will give you more time on the island and is a good choice if you want to avoid the midday tour boat crowds. Cirkewwa can be reached by public bus from destinations across Malta.

Remember to wear good walking shoes as the walking tracks can be rough and uneven. Bring cash and suncream, as well as a hat for protection from the summer sun.
