Malta is the sunniest country in Europe, basking under almost 3000 hours a year of sunshine. Even in the height of winter you can enjoy the rays, as the sun shines for more than 300 days a year. Such a superb climate makes Malta an ideal holiday destination every month of the year, although there are wide seasonal variations.
The winters are mild and usually dry. You’ll find it warm beneath the sun, but it does get chilly in the shade and at night, so pack a good jumper for the evenings. Average daily highs from December to February are 16 to 18ºC. Spring quickly heats up with the warm winds that blow in from Africa: the temperature hits 20ºC by early April and quickly rises to the mid-20s by May.
June to August are hot and dry, with some scorching daytime temperatures in July and August. During mid-summer it stays warm through the night and you’ll be glad of the air conditioning at your hotel. September to November are warm and humid, as well as being the wettest of the months in Malta.
July and August are peak season in Malta, coinciding with the school holiday period. June and September are still very warm but the islands are less crowded. There are great deals to be found outside these core summer months, with April, May and October becoming increasingly popular months for visiting Malta. You won’t find many other tourists from November to March but there’s no reason not to visit in these months - just pick a hotel that has year-round facilities – the weather will be so much better than home and most of the island attractions stay open throughout winter.
